I've been a stick in the mud about blogging. Fundamental to the whole notion is the conceit that someone is interested, that someone will perceive what you have to say as having value. Now, I think I have things to say, some more valid than others, but the act of publishing a blog announces that conceit to the world. So there it is: I have some things to say. You might be interested.
You might be so interested that you'll engage in a conversation with me and others about something that comes up. I take a particular joy in conversation- good conversation, energized by passion, bolstered by facts, enlivened by humor, sharpened by sarcasm, and guided at all times by reason and compassion.
I've come to recognize that I have a great many interests, and the blog format sets no boundaries, unless I choose them. I suspect I'll come to find there are somethings I won't blog about, because they're too personal, too difficult to write about with sufficient care or depth, or just not thought out. But I can be certain that this is going to have pictures of, and essays about, bikes. It's going to chronicle the life and growth of my newborn son. It's going to have my thoughts on my career, on politics, social trends, the media, design, and music. But for sure, it's gonna have bikes. Beautiful, steel (mostly), lugged, classic (or current), highly personalized, lovingly cared-for person-powered machines. If you have a bike that I find beautiful, I might just take a picture of it, and feature it here.
I live in Oakland. I ride bikes. Maybe we'll ride together some day.
